Celebrating 40 years at Buchan

We would like to recognise two key figures at Buchan who have recently celebrated a remarkable 40 years with the practice – Director and Principal, Bruce Shaw and Principal Greg Sheehan.

Bruce and Greg have made a significant contribution to Buchan and architecture during their influential careers, not only through design, but more recently through their support and guidance of our next generation of architects and designers.

Both have held roles as directors on the Buchan board and sat alongside each other as joint managing principals several years ago.

We took the opportunity to ask Bruce and Greg a few questions about their time at Buchan.

Bruce Shaw, Principal and Director at Buchan

Looking back: “Working on Westfield London, Stratford, and mega projects in the Middle East during the early 2000s was incredibly demanding but immensely rewarding.”

Evolution of Buchan: “When I joined, Buchan was a small practice of 30-40 people, steeped in history and tradition, but poised for major growth. Today, it offers significant career opportunities for the next generation, continuing its expansion both nationally and internationally.”

On Buchan: “I was attracted by Buchan’s ambition to grow in scale, geography, and sectors. That same opportunity for growth and career development exists today.”

Key influencers: “Llew Bawden, who led the firm when I joined, was a visionary thinker and an amazing storyteller. His ability to graphically walk through the design process and present it compellingly to clients was inspiring. He was a humble leader in our profession.”

Essential in Architecture: “Storytelling is more important than ever – crafting a vision that is relevant to environmental, cultural, historical, geographical, and commercial influences.”

Advice for aspiring architects: “If you’re passionate about architecture, embrace the bumps in the road. The highs will outweigh the lows. Never be afraid to take opportunities to use your initiative. Every opinion counts and hard work will always be rewarded.”

Greg Sheehan Principal at Buchan

Looking back: “The industry education I got in my very early years being the Project Architect responsible for delivering the Myer Centre in Brisbane, and then the Treasury Casino and Hotel was a highlight. As has been helping establish and grow Buchan from our Brisbane studio.”

Evolution of Buchan: “Buchan was already ahead of the game 40 years ago, collaborating with international architectural firms to deliver great client outcomes for complex projects. What excited me then is what excites me now – Buchan’s diverse portfolio of work.”

Key influencers:  “Paul Malone was a great businessman who knew how to get clients excited. He was always open to giving opportunities to young architects who had the drive and willingness to learn. His faith in me as the Project Architect was a major factor in gaining my architectural registration.”

Essential in Architecture: “While technology is crucial, clients often respond more readily to the hand-drawn masterplan or concept sketch. Detailed questioning of and active listening to clients and stakeholders is vitally important to establish an accurate reverse brief before putting ‘pen to paper’.”

Advice for aspiring architects: “Don’t be shy—question and closely listen to clients and mentors, and hand draw concept and masterplans as much as possible with passion. If you want to work on and see major projects being delivered, be prepared for a roller coaster of a ride.”
