Canberra North

Capitalising on an opportunity to revitalise the city centre, the redevelopment of Canberra North seeks to create a thriving cultural hub in the heart of Australia’s capital city.

Appointed by client QIC, Buchan developed the overall masterplan for the site together with the design for a significant mixed-use development on an undeveloped CBD carpark known as Section 96.

Setting a sustainable precedent for future expansion, Buchan closely analysed the existing streetscape to inform the masterplan. A focus on activated, landscaped pedestrian spaces break down the mass of the development.

Integrated, unique laneways lead to a central piazza and tie into the existing urban fabric seamlessly, activating the city centre and creating a thriving cultural hub for Canberra’s population.

Incorporating both best-practice urban design and placemaking, Buchan’s scope covers the entire development’s built form. The proposed development includes a boutique 5-star hotel, two commercial office towers, two Build to Rent towers, two levels of retail, basement car parking, extensive streetscape work with a fully pedestrianised piazza.
